I spend a
LOT of time in the kitchen and figured I might as well enjoy the tools of my trade. Stainless steel, plastic and glass just don't speak to my soul so I have been slowly replacing my utilitarian bowls, casserole dishes, utensils, etc. with pieces that I find to be beautiful. I have splurged on some heavy wooden spoons and have been picking up crockery/pottery mixing bowls and casserole dishes at thrift stores and yard sales. I love finding pieces from the 60s and 70s and I use them almost daily. My sister-in-law gave me this cute set of measuring spoons for Christmas a few years ago and I have started using them too. It makes me happy to use an everyday item that I find to be beautiful as well as functional. :)
Do you prefer function or beauty in your household items, or do you try to find items that fulfill both criteria?
Linking up with Nancy for
Tuesday Muse.
For me, function trumps beauty in the kitchen -- but it's so nice to have both in one! :)
ReplyDeletethat's totally cool. you do spend a lot of time in your kitchen. :)
ReplyDeleteI should live by that saying! I have a terribly small, inadequate kitchen...with almost no storage. Certainly no counter storage...but I love pretty kitchen items. I just can't have them. Also, I don't spend much time there. ;-) This is a beautiful composition, Candy!
ReplyDeleteI love older pieces too - just be sure the pretty measuring spoons are accurate. I learned that lesson the hard way.
ReplyDeleteI found a large about 2 gallon size white bowl with blue stripe thought it would look great full of potato salad (LOL, just me what do I need with 2 gallons of potato salad) didn't notice until I got home that it says Bruce's Popcorn on the side. I had even turned it over to see if there were any marks on the bottom. Nice bowl if you face lettering to the wall, LOL
ReplyDeleteCandy,
ReplyDeleteI have gone through the entire house and tossed, organized, and put in boxes go give away. I don't like clutter and prefer to keep things as simple as possible.
I like function and beauty is an added bonus.
If you don't use it or don't like it toss it or give it a way!
I love my wooden spoons! And I've inherited those "old" avocado green set of mixing bowls from my mom and love them too. ONE day I'm going to donate my butt-ugly set of crummy metal measuring spoons for a set like yours; they're beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI love ceramic bowls - but, I have to confess, the one bowl I use most of all is a green plastic one from the dollar store! I use wooden spoons for everything except cheesemaking. They feel so much better in my hand.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I love using vintage piece of dishes. I did cry when I lost one of my bowls.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know I'm not the only one who prefers the feel of something . . real.
ReplyDeleteYour quote & picture is marvelous . . .
love & love,

Oh I have been using my 1960 bowls to mix with a cool wooden spoon lately too. I like it it seems so much more soothing then steel bowl with steel spoon. Wood and glass yes I get it. :) Hug B
ReplyDeleteI love both. I saw some ceramic measuring spoons today and I laughed, cute but no way accurate. I stick with my Mom's old ceramic and stainless steel mixing bowls. I love glass and old ceramic stuff. If it's plastic I'm usually gleaning it out of the kitchen. Soon I'd like to get a new set of melamine mixing bowls, in multi colors...
ReplyDeleteI love the bowl!
ReplyDeleteI just always worry about them getting broke!
i love finding old pieces to use in the kitchen from flea markets, goodwill, etc...makes me happy when i use them. it doesn't make me happy to use new junk from walmart :(
ReplyDeleteI made a rule for myself years ago that if I bought a collectible it had to serve its purpose beyond decor... I love using vintage kitchen pieces, knowing some other women (wife?) used them to the pleasure of her family and herself!
ReplyDeleteFunction is very important to me. I look outside the mundane to find beauty. I might have to rethink that after this beautiful photo.
ReplyDeleteI want both beauty and function.
ReplyDeleteOr beauty and memories.
Just not too many items though.
I'm a minimalist at heart tempered with reality.
And I love buying used.
Oh Candy--I am sorry I haven't been in touch much lately! My blogging has been real hit and miss these days, and this has been a very crazy summer, as you can tell by my last post! Thank you for your condolences about Russell's Dad. Love your pretty baking things! I think I have that same spoon. I love crockware bowls and have a few. We're thinking about canning some saurkraut next.
