DIY Seasoned Rice Mix

Everyone loves convenience foods, right? Me too, I just don't like paying the extra money for them and I REALLY don't like what is in some of them! I have this seasoned rice mix in my cupboard at all times ready to use when time is running short on getting supper ready. I use Uncle Ben's whole grain brown rice and chicken bouillon but you could use any type of rice and whatever flavor of bouillon you like.

3 cups uncooked brown rice
1/4 cup dried parsley flakes
6 teaspoons instant chicken flavor bouillon
2 teaspoons onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon white pepper

Combine all ingredients in a storage container with a tight fitting lid. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. Stir well before each use.

To use, bring 2-1/4 cups water and 1 tablespoon butter to a boil in a medium saucepan. Stir in 1 cup of the seasoned rice mix. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. Makes 6 (1/2-cup) servings.

We had some last night with baked salmon and steamed broccoli! YUM!! Linking to the Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop at Deborah Jean's Dandelion House! :)

I'll have to try this! Might even make small jars for Christmas gifts along with some other homemade goodies...everybody loves convenient foods that are healthy, right?! Thank for the recipe!

Sounds tasty - I agree who would eat those over processed, over packaged, over priced side dishes? Thanks for sharing I know what I will be making this weekend.

Alica,
I like the idea of giving this as Christmas gifts! :)

Grace,
The fact that those little pouches of seasoned rice were overprocessed and overpriced got me started making this several years ago! ;-)

How do you come up with all these fantastic ideas?? This is the perfect convenience food!

ooooo that is so creative! I'll have to try that. Always into saving money and still having a little "convenience" food too! My favorite is the Uncle Ben's Long Grain and Wild Rice, but I will try this fer sure! Besides, plain old rice gets boring after a while, and something new and healthy suits me just fine!! Thanks!!

Looks good~but I would have to figure out how to make it vegetarian.

Susan,
This one came from one of those supermarket checkout stand recipe books from about 10 years ago! :)

SweetLand Farm,
If the rice you like is unseasoned, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just cook it for the time called for on the package. :)

Teresa,
They do make vegetable bouillon too, I'm not sure how easy it is to find though!

Thank you for the seasoned rice recipe. I have been in love with a store bought box of chicken rice made by Tony Roma. I wanted to make my own seasoned rice and found your wonderful recipe!
