Sunday Photo - Hollyhocks

My friend gave me two little hollyhock plants earlier this year. She called them "black" but it kind of depends on the light. As you can see, in the morning sunlight, they are a deep reddish-purple.

In the afternoon sunlight, they do look darker.

My hollyhocks are planted in one of the barrels in the back yard. One of the plants is almost finished blooming but the other, on the right, is just getting ready. I'm going to try to save seeds as I have read that hollyhocks are a biennial or a short-lived perennial. I have enjoyed these so much that I want to grow them again! :)

My MIL brought me back one of these from So Dakota a couple of years ago and it did bloom, but did not return this year. I think Buck was using it as a fire hydrant. Lol.

I love hollyhocks... my dad always had a wide variety of colors in his garden and most were the old fashioned single flowers like this one rather than the ones that look like powder puffs... Thank you Candy, for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #34!

I love the deep purple color. We loved playing with hollyhocks when we were kids. We'd make lovely ladies out of them, which I hope young girls are still learning today. Much more interesting as a memory than a video game.

Stunning! I gave up on hollyhocks because of the leaf miners and weevils. But your pic is making me want to try them again :)
