Early Fall/Winter Garden

I got the seeds in the ground a couple of weeks ago for the beginning of the fall/winter garden. I use the square foot gardening approach and I'm going to do better about succession planting this year. Some things have come up and are doing great, others haven't come up yet. I SWEAR I saw sprouts where I planted the broccoli and cauliflower the other day but there's nothing there now!!

Snow Peas

Radishes

Carrots

Spinach

Lettuce

Rutabagas

Cabbage

I also planted seeds for parsnips, turnips and beets but they haven't come up yet. Maybe I will replant them this week.

That happened to me.
I planted some things from seed and so far nothing. It's been more than a couple of weeks.

I was truly hoping to get something!

good luck with yours, hope your garden is productive.

Thanks Pat, I sure can't figure out what is eating the little plants, unless it's the grasshoppers. :(

There does seem to be an abundance of grasshoppers this year. I don't remember seeing many of them last year, but this year there are hoards of them. How amazing it is to see photographs of sunny days. I do remember them. Vaguely.

Susan,
We have TONS of grasshoppers now because of all the rain we got this summer. We got a nice shower the day after I took these pictures, it had been almost a week since it had rained. Hope you get some sunny days soon! :)

This same thing has happened to me before... where somebody eats up all the little started shoots of something in the garden... and I'm not even sure who is the guilty critter!

homegrown countrygirl,
Yeah, I'm not SURE it's the grasshoppers, could be the birds I guess. I had four little rutabaga plants the other day, now there are only two! :(

Thanks Candy! I was wanting to ask you what you were planting here in AZ for our "fall" gardening. It boggles my mind every year how long it stays hot here :( we're still topping 100+ on average down in Phoenix.
Guess it's about time I got my new pea beds in shape and my container soil all compost rich!

Dusky Beauty,
It is pretty neat that we can garden pretty much year round here in AZ! The nice thing about fall planting is that it's still warm enough for the seeds to germinate but then it cools off so that the "cool weather" crops don't suffer. I would wait until your nights are getting down into the 60s before starting seeds. Happy gardening! :)
